Welcome to Suffern, nestled in the foothills of Harriman State Park. There’s an abundance of hiking trails in the area beginning with our own Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail (SBM). A quick 20 minute hike up the trail rewards the hiker with sweeping views of Suffern, Mahwah and onward toward the NYC skyline on the horizon. Northward, the trail extends 23.5 rugged miles to Bear Mountain, making it the longest trail in Harriman State Park.
The trail head is situated within walking distance of our train station and main street. Just follow the painted yellow trail blazes (scroll down for transportation and parking info). For technical details on the SBM Trail and others, click NY/NJ Trail Conference or you can visit the stunning grounds of the NYNJTC at 600 Ramapo Valley Road, in Mahwah, NJ, just under 4 miles from Suffern. Be sure to pick up a Harriman Bear Mountain Map! You can also purchase a download here!
Another great source is MyHarriman.com. Click Suffern & Harriman State Park for a write-up by Suzy of the trail town corridor’s most referred to website. Read her other articles, Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail, 83 Years Ago: “A Stiff New Trail Calls to Hikers” and Hike the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail.
Visit the Explore Harriman Facebook Page where the trail towns post news and interesting details on hiking, climbing, kayaking, where to dine or stay.
Review Suffern’s Restaurant Directory. There is a great selection of cuisines ranging from American, Latin, Indian, Chinese and Japanese. You’ll also find NYS Craft Beer as well as wine from our local vineyard. And Suffern always offers plenty of live entertainment.
You can sign-up with Airbnb Suffern. There are many great rooms/homes/apartments available! For more cushier accomodations, contact The Crowne Plaza or Torne Valley Vineyards. And for a fantastic, more remote sweet spot, you must visit, the AMC’s Harriman Outdoor Center!
Join Base Camp 17, a Facebook Page devoted to connecting car-less (or one-way) hikers and backpackers with volunteer drivers in the Hudson Valley area. Be sure to read the description on the page for the “how-to”!
