Designed by architect Eugene DeRosa and it’s construction completed in 1924, the Lafayette Theater was named for the Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. The silent film “Scaramouche” was the first to grace it’s screen, the theater became home to live vaudeville shows and film presentations and has since remained a single screen movie theater. The Lafayette’s future as a single-screen neighborhood movie palace was uncertain until Robert Benmosche, a resident of Suffern and Chairman and CEO of MetLife at the time, saw the potential and purchased the building. The theater remains open and welcomes guests with first run films, classic films and other live performances.
The Rhinoceros is an endangered animal, with a unique horned head. It is sometimes thought of as an ugly unicorn. It is a symbol provided to us by Ionescu, a Romanian absurdist theater playwright. For our purposes the Rhinoceros serves as a place for actors, writers and comedians to hide when the authorities come looking for them. Catch one of our shows, take some classes, and wait with bated breath for our forthcoming web series!
